Überblick (Overview)

Listening tasks test your ability to understand spoken German. Audio may play only once at higher levels (B1/B2), so “one-pass listening” is a critical skill.

Aufgabentyp 1: Wörter → Bilder (Task Type 1: Words → Pictures) (pre-A1 / A1)

Format: Hear 3 words → tap the 3 matching pictures from a set.

What you need: Recognize spoken words for everyday objects/concepts.

Example:

Audio: “Brot… Milch… Apfel” → Tap the pictures for bread, milk, apple

Strategy:

  • Learn pronunciation of the 200 most common nouns
  • Pay attention: some words sound similar (Kirche/Kirsche, Bett/Bad)
  • Respond immediately — don’t overthink

Aufgabentyp 2: Kurzer Text → richtiges Bild (Task Type 2: Short Text → Correct Picture) (A1 / A2)

Format: Listen to a short text or dialogue → for each line, choose the correct picture.

What you need: Understand the gist + specific details (who, what, where, when).

Example:

Audio: “Der Mann geht am Montag zum Arzt.” → Choose picture of: man + doctor + Monday

Strategy:

  • Before audio plays, look at all picture options to anticipate
  • Listen for: numbers, days, places, actions
  • If you miss something, make your best guess and move on

Aufgabentyp 3: Interview/Umfrage → Aussagen zuordnen (Task Type 3: Interview/Survey → Assign Statements) (B1)

Format: Listen to a conversation or survey with multiple speakers → match each person to a statement.

What you need: Distinguish between speakers and track who said what.

Example:

Audio: 3 people talk about their commute.

Match:

  • Person 1 → “fährt mit dem Velo” (cycles)
  • Person 2 → “nimmt den Zug” (takes the train)
  • Person 3 → “geht zu Fuss” (walks)

Strategy:

  • Read ALL statements before the audio starts
  • Note keywords in each statement
  • Listen for the speaker transition (new voice = new person)
  • Mark as you hear — don’t wait until the end

Aufgabentyp 4: Umfrage → Haltung einschätzen (Task Type 4: Survey → Attitude Assessment) (B1 / B2)

Format: Listen to people giving opinions → classify each as: zufrieden (satisfied) / unzufrieden (dissatisfied) / keine Aussage (no statement).

What you need: Understand tone, opinion words, and implicit meaning.

Example:

Audio: “Ja, der Service war in Ordnung, aber das Essen war leider nicht gut.”unzufrieden (despite the neutral start, the “aber” + negative ending = dissatisfied)

Strategy:

  • Listen for opinion markers: gut, schlecht, toll, furchtbar, leider, zum Glück
  • Listen for “aber” — it often reverses the meaning
  • “Keine Aussage” = the person talks about the topic but doesn’t express an opinion
  • At B2, speakers may be indirect — listen for tone and hedging words

Allgemeine Hörstrategien (General Listening Strategies)

  1. One-pass preparation: At B1/B2 level, audio may play only once. Train yourself to catch key info on first listen.
  2. Pre-read everything: Before audio starts, read all questions/options. Know what you’re listening for.
  3. Keywords, not full sentences: You don’t need to understand every word. Listen for the keywords that match the answer options.
  4. Numbers and names: These are frequently tested. Practice hearing German numbers (especially 13–30 and compound numbers like 67, 84).
  5. Don’t freeze: If you miss an answer, let it go and focus on the next one. You can’t rewind.
